The Russian Orthodox Church is united under the Patriarch of Moscow. It is also known as the Orthodox Christian Church of Russia and it is in permanent communion with the rest of the Christians of the Eastern Christian Church, so Russian Orthodox people and the rest of the Eastern Orthodox people are in communion also.

It is also said that on that spot a cross was erected, and today St Andrew’s Cathedral stands on that very spot.

During tatar invasion, during the 15th Century, Russian Orthodoxy was the strength of the Russian people, they gathered around religion in order to resist and even to expand from a cultural and economical point of view.
Reorganization of Russian Orthodox Church
In the 17th century there was a period of reorganization of the orthodoxy in Russia. The Patriarch imposed changes that were not always well received. Some of the Russian believers didn’t accept the changes and saw them as heresy. They are known as the Old Ritual Believers and they separated from the Orthodox Church.
In the late 17th century and the beginning of 18th, Russian Orthodoxy expanded a lot geographically. A lot of changes happened since then.
In 20th century, because of the political changes, Orthodox Church of Russia had a lot to suffer. Up to that moment, tsarist government gave a lot of privileges to the church. Now, with the new political power, a separation of the orthodox church and state was imposed, so the church found itself alone for the first time in history, without the support of the state.
