What you want to communicate with your church website
|
One of the first things you should think about is what you want to communicate with your church website. Why do you actually build a website for your church? What you intend to do? If you just want to have a web presence, ok, you can build a website and that's all, but this way you would not have any return from your website. "Just have it there" is not an answer!
|
| You should really establish a target for your church site. Think of what you want to achieve: - You want to atract more visitors to your church? Yes, that is a reason to have a site
- Make your church mission more visible and for this you use the internet? Yes, this is a reason too
- Establish an information point where people find out about your church meetings? Yes, that is a strong reason to have a site. This way you can keep your church members informed through a news system, by using newsgroups, email groups, RSS feeds, etc (you shoul also read my article about RSS feeds, you may find great information there about what RSS feeds are)
- Get donations
- Make a statement
| All these are strong reasons for building a church website. For all these reasons you have to focus and build the site with this in mind. You have to follow your proposed target. If you want to get donations, explain people why you need donations, what is the need, whay you intend to do with the donations.
Always ask yourself what you intend to do. Don't build a website for your church that has no target. The internet is full of non targeted websites, put there just to exist.
Remember that a website needs to attract visitors and give them what they need.
Give your visitors what they are looking for
You should ask yourself also what your visitors are looking on your website. Put yourself in the place of a visitor reaching your website. What information is he looking for? Maybe he tries to find out what is your church meetings schedule. Put this in a visible place.
Maybe he tries to find out what is the closest church in his area and he reached your website, give him information about the location of your church.
The ideea is simple: give your visitor string reasons to visit your website, and if they are there, give them the information they are looking for. Remember that an internet visitor is not on your website because he looked for your particular website, these situations are rare. Probably he found your website looking for some information. Give him the information that he needs, also keeping in mind the reason you built your website for.
Make the information you provide on your website conform to your target.
