Christian music industry is very well defined, it brings in $700 million annually, about 6% of the music revenue in Canada and US. There are more styles of music and a lot of well known artists in each one. We try to list a few Christian musical styles below:
GOSPEL: It is a style developed from African-American churches in the 1930s. It relies on a lot of choral arrangements of hymns and four-part vocal harmonies. Rhythm and blues, jazz and soul music started here. Well-known artists or groups include Mahalia Jackson, The Golden Gate Quartet and Al Green.
SOUTHERN GOSPEL: This branch of gospel music evolved in the Southeastern states of the U.S. It emphasizes close vocal harmonies accompanied by a piano, pedal steel or acoustic guitar. Well-known artists include The Blackwood Brothers, The Bill Gaither Trio and David L. Cook.
PRAISE AND WORSHIP: Characterized by simple chord structures and repeatable lyrics often taken from the Bible or well-known hymns. It is often played during church services, and a growing number of Christian artists are including praise songs on their CDs. Well-known artists include Passion, Delirious? and Matt Redman.
CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN: Lyrics emphasize the artist’s spiritual devotion with pop-driven melodies and chords. The genre ranges in sound from catchy pop hooks to orchestral and choral arrangements. Well-known artists or groups include Sixpence None the Richer, Sara Groves and Newsboys.
ALTERNATIVE CHRISTIAN: Has heavy punk, modern rock and metal influences with Christian lyrical themes. Purists argue the lyrical compositions are sometimes more controversial than contemporary Christian music. Artists include Switchfoot, MxPx and Reliant K.
RAP/R&B CHRISTIAN: Emphasizes rhythmic structure. Poetic rhyming devices open the door for a number of complex Christian issues to be heard. Artists include KJ-52, tobyMac and dc Talk. |
